Spinning and Flipping: The Varial Kickflip

The varial kickflip is a dope skateboard trick that combines a kickflip with a 180-degree backside pop shove-it, making the board flip and spin simultaneously. It’s a stylish street move that builds on your pop shove-it and kickflip skills, perfect for adding flair to your sessions. Though it’s a bit trickier, with practice, you’ll land it smooth and open the door to combos like the tre flip.

How to Varial Kickflip: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Here’s how to land a varial kickflip. Practice on a smooth, flat surface like a skatepark or driveway, and wear a helmet. Being solid with your kickflip and pop shove-it is essential.

  1. Set Your Stance: Place your back foot on the tail’s edge, toes angled slightly toward the heel side for a shove-it scoop. Position your front foot like a kickflip, just behind the front bolts, angled 45 degrees toward the nose, with toes slightly off the edge.
  2. Pop and Scoop: Bend your knees and snap the tail down with your back foot, scooping it backward to start a 180-degree backside shove-it spin. Use less force than a full pop shove-it to keep the board low.
  3. Flick for the Flip: As you pop, drag your front foot’s toes forward and upward toward the nose, flicking off the edge to initiate a kickflip. The flick should be quick but gentle to combine with the shove-it spin.
  4. Jump and Catch: Jump upward, keeping your eyes on the board as it flips and spins. Let it complete the 180-degree spin and full flip, then catch it with your back foot first to stop the motion, followed by your front foot.
  5. Land and Roll: Land with both feet over the bolts, knees bent to absorb the impact. Roll away smoothly, keeping your shoulders aligned to maintain balance.
