Landing the Classic Kickflip

The kickflip is one of skateboarding’s most iconic tricks, flipping the board 360 degrees along its length while you jump. It’s a natural progression from the ollie and a must-learn for any skater looking to level up their street style. Though it’s challenging, mastering the kickflip takes practice, patience, and proper technique. Once you stick it, you’ll be ready for variations like the double kickflip or tre flip.

How to Kickflip: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Here’s how to land a kickflip. Practice on a smooth, flat surface like a driveway or skatepark, and wear a helmet. Being solid with your ollie and pop shove-it will make this easier.

  1. Set Your Stance: Place your back foot on the tail, like an ollie, with toes slightly angled for popping. Position your front foot just behind the front bolts, angled 45 degrees toward the nose, with your heel hanging off slightly.
  2. Pop the Tail: Bend your knees and snap the tail down hard with your back foot to pop the board into the air, using the same force as an ollie.
  3. Flick the Edge: As the board pops, drag your front foot forward and upward toward the nose, then flick your toes off the edge (near the concave). This flicking motion flips the board 360 degrees.
  4. Jump and Catch: Jump upward, keeping your eyes on the board as it flips. Let it complete the full rotation, then catch it with your back foot first to stop the flip, followed by your front foot.
  5. Land and Roll: Bend your knees to absorb the impact as you land with both feet over the bolts. Roll away smoothly, keeping your balance centered.
