Conquering the Skatepark Ramp

Dropping in on a skateboard ramp—whether a quarter pipe or halfpipe—is a thrilling rite of passage for skaters. It’s the gateway to flowing through skateparks, pumping transitions, and unlocking advanced tricks. Though it looks intimidating, dropping in is all about commitment, balance, and technique. Once you nail it, you’ll feel unstoppable riding curves like a pro.

Master this skill with confidence using our guide and the Skate Tricks app, which offers slow-motion tutorials to perfect your drop-in. Let’s break it down!

How to Drop In: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Follow these steps to drop in on a ramp. Start on a small, mellow ramp (3–4 feet) at a skatepark, and wear a helmet and pads for safety. Being comfortable with basic riding helps.

  1. Position Your Board: Stand at the ramp’s coping (metal edge), tail pressed against it, nose over the ramp. Place your back foot on the tail, front foot lightly near the front bolts.
  2. Align Your Body: Lean slightly forward, shoulders squared with the ramp’s slope. Keep knees bent and eyes focused on where you’ll roll (down the ramp, not the ground).
  3. Commit to the Drop: Push your weight forward over the board, letting the nose tilt down the ramp. Don’t lean back—this causes wipeouts. Fully commit to rolling forward.
  4. Stay Balanced: As you descend, keep weight centered over the board, knees bent to absorb the transition. Press lightly with your front foot to guide the board down.
  5. Roll Away: Hit the bottom of the ramp with momentum, stay low, and pump through the transition to maintain speed. Smile—you just dropped in!
